Meanwhile, GOP operative and Karl Rove confidante Grover Norquist, who is single-handedly responsible for opening the doors of political power for convicted al-Qaeda fundraiser Abdurahman Alamoudi and Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami Al-Arian, was given the honor of introducing House Minority Leader John Boehner on Friday morning. The contrast between the cold reception of Wilders and the warm embrace of Norquist by CPAC could not be any starker.
Norquist's politics aside, he's done more to cement the anti-tax gospel than anyone in the GOP -- and that's including Ronald Reagan. (Flame away, conservatives.) Norquist is largely responsible for whitewashing the fact that Reagan actually raised taxes during his presidency and creating an article of economic faith around the Laffer Curve. For better and for worst much of what the GOP is today is due to the hard work of Norquist.
Incidently, Norquist's wife is a practicing Muslim (much to the dismay of such luminaries as Daniel Pipes) and he once had the strange notion of thinking that Muslim-Americans might find a natural home within the GOP ... but we all know that's clearly "pre-9/11 thinking."
So to make a long story short ... the rending of the conservative movement will only get worse before it gets better and it appears to be occurring along many policy lines.
Have fun, y'all!
