The Steelers do Dallas

Everything about this blog post is brilliant:

Late Monday night, hours after they arrived here, Hines Ward, Ike Taylor and several other members of the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked it at Dallas Gentlemen's Club on Northwest Highway in Dallas.

[...]

When Ward and his teammates entered the club, super hot dancers converged on them. They spent a few minutes in the VIP at the back of the club. But as the music pumped and the bootylicious women strode across the four stages, the Steelers huddled in the front corner of the club for closer looks.

Ward, wearing a plaid shirt and jeans, danced with a couple of strippers. At one point, he tossed out dollars as various hotties gave him lap dances. Other Steelers joined him in the fun.

At one point, near midnight, the Steelers, including huge linemen, appeared on the main stage., There they posed and danced with an assortment of strippers. After all, it was "make it rain Monday" at the club. And some of the players certainly made it rain with their dollar bills.

Dick Morris Calls Russ Feingold Gay

Way to run a classy operation, AFP!

At this weekend's Sheboygan Freedom Rally, Dick Morris demonstrated why he's America's favorite visitor-of-prostitutes/FOX News contributor:
Nationally known multi-faceted political commentator/analyst/writer Dick Morris dove right into the Wisconsin scene. “For Russ Feingold to pose as a moderate, as an independent…my goodness, it shows how far we’ve come when Russ Feingold tries to dress up like us. But that act of transvestitism [sic.] is going a little far even for Greenwich Village and San Francisco – or Madison.”
No need for dog whistles with that statement.

Quote of the Week

Director/Actor Eli Roth on his cameo in Piranha 3D:
After "Inglorious Basterds," I thought it was gonna take a lot to get me out of acting retirement. Because how are you going to top working for Quentin Tarantino alongside Brad Pitt? But ["Piranha 3D" director] Alex Aja, in his very charming French way, said to me, "I have written a part for you: I want you to be the wet T-shirt contest host." And I said, "OK, what time do you need me?" So I went to Lake Havasu, and it was like being in the middle of a bizarre frat party: it was 500 people, 300 of them in bikinis, all of them in incredible shape. It was ridiculous. I was on a raft hosing down breasts for two days. After the first day, I called up Tarantino and said, "I think I found a director I like working with more than you."

More on NOM

Steve Chapman has a good round-up on the NOM rally:

So why would NOM hold a rally where it is sure of being badly outnumbered by motivated and well-organized critics? Maybe because that's what it wanted. The Summer for Marriage Tour could have been called the Come Shout Us Down Tour.

The endeavor has managed to make opponents of gay marriage look like a brave, embattled minority, even though they constitute 53 percent of the public and have gotten their way in all but a few states. At today's rally, NOM supporters just number two or three dozen.

NOM's website (www.nationformarriage.org) focuses not on any outpouring of support for its cause, but on the protesters who have appeared at its rallies, including some it accuses of disruptive and intimidating tactics. "Watch the shocking video here!" it proclaims, linking to a clip from a somewhat raucous event that, in truth, falls short of shocking.

Agreed.

Then he concludes:

It's hard to get terribly outraged when a group that goes out of its way to be drowned out by its critics almost gets drowned out by its critics. But the people here to support "traditional marriage" can accurately claim that they have been impeded in their effort to communicate their views.

You see, NOM and its allies attest that after all, they don't want to deny the other side the right to speak. They just want to enjoy the same right.

To which the other side might reply: Hmm. Kind of like what we say about marriage.

Yup.

Nom Nom Nom

Apparently the most pressing issue regarding yesterday's hugely embarrassing NOM rally is whether the counter protesters were too loud, which is a really bad sign for the dipshits hosting the event.

Lost in the shuffle is the actual purpose of this traveling freak show: to rally the base in an election year. Six years ago the attendance would have been much larger than the 20-30 people that appear to have shown up. Hell, four years ago an event like this would have been a bigger deal, but the anemic showing yesterday should be evidence of just how far the evangelical far right has fallen.

Not only are Christian conservatives out of favor with mainstream America these days, but their power in the GOP is also waning, having been replaced by Libertarian influences that have largely eschewed state-sponsored moralizing. NOM itself is a great example of just how hard times are for these folks. Five years ago NOM would have been staffed by an elite cadre of conservative operatives who would have used sophisticated tools and strategies to push a message that would have brought their base to the polls, but these fourth-rate hacks are reduced to driving around and going basically door-to-door. It's pretty sad.

Anyway, since NOM can't get it up anymore they're left with one arrow in their quiver: baiting counterprotesters. Really, that's all yesterday's spectacle was about. Here's Glenn Grothman -- a man who is as useful as a marshmallow dildo -- making that point:

It's all about maintaining the illusion that the homophobes are actually the ones being oppressed. This is the exact same media strategy employed by Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church. Why the hell do you think they held this event in Madison and not, for example, in Waukesha County, where they would have been greeted more warmly? I mean, the dude in this video actually compared himself to William Wilberforce, the guy who rather heroically worked to ban slavery in England.

Seriously.

If shouting them down gives these clowns an air of dignity, then it's probably a bad idea, but if you look at the videos, that really didn't happen because these folks are apparently incapable of appearing the slightest bit sane, much less dignified. So long as they remain the nutters that we all know they are, there's really no harm in telling them to fuck off as loud as you can.

More of This, Please

Add Word Warrior to your RSS feed/bookmarks/whatever. Very impressive stuff. On the blog's about page the author(s) state rather succinctly that they want to "cross visions" -- in this case modern feminist thought with traditional Catholicism -- and they do an exceptional job of doing just that. It's quirky, smart, experimental and nuanced. Frankly, it's the best student blog in Wisconsin.

The kids, as they say, remain alright.

Teaching Sex Ed

Take it away, MJS:

The Legislative Council memo found that in a 1974 case the state Supreme Court found that a local official could not be prosecuted under a law that prohibited officials from having a public and private interest in a contract. That’s because the official in the case had relied on the advice and counsel of a government attorney and a local prosecutor before acting, the court held.

That suggests a teacher could not be prosecuted for teaching a sex education class if he or she “in good faith” relies upon a program that a school board created to follow a state law, the analysis reads.
And this is why DA Southworth, and others, are full of it.

This is an opinion Southworth should have looked into before sending his threatening letter, which was clearly done as a PR stunt to buttress his conservative bona fides in the community and not for any legitimate legal reasons.

And Speaking of GOP Recruitment...

Well done.

Someone Call WisGOP Candidate Recruitment...

There's a douchebag making an ass of himself in public:
Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth has sent a letter to five school districts warning them that requirement promotes sexual assault.

He says it’s illegal for minors to have sex and teaching the use of contraceptives encourages sexual behavior. Teachers who know students are having sex and then teaches those students the use of contraceptives could be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
